I am planning for my dog to get neutered, and I am wondering about after…?

I know at my vets office, they keep him over night the day it is done. He is a about a year old Maltese. We have waited this long to do it because after we rescued him, he had a lot of health problems and the vet wanted to take care of those first. Now he is good health. My two year old is going to be gone for a week, so we are going to have it done then. What things will I need to do for him? Will he have to wear one of those big collars? How will being neutered affect his personality, if at all? Thanks for any advice!
